硫黄の匂いが立ち込めて、何やら怪しげな雰囲気です。 The strong smell of sulfur fills the air and makes the place feel a bit eerie.

史跡として、昔から数々の伝説が残る地です。
那須温泉の人々は、ここでとれる湯の花を徳川幕府の頃から、年貢米の代りに納めていたということです。 This historic site has been linked to many legends for a long time.
People in the Nasu hot spring area are said to have paid tax with “yunohana” (mineral deposits) from here instead of rice in the Tokugawa shogunate period.

お地蔵様の列が並んでお出迎え。 A row of stone Jizo statues stands along the path to welcome visitors.

これが殺生石です。
９尾の狐の妖怪が石に化けて、近づく者に毒気を出して命を奪ったという伝説があります。
陰陽師によって正体を見破られ、日蓮によって退治されました。 This is the famous Sessho-seki.
Legend says that a nine-tailed fox spirit changed into this stone and gave off poison that killed people who came near.
An onmyoji (court diviner) discovered its true form, and the monk Nichiren later defeated it.

殺生石と隣接する那須温泉神社。
那須与一が扇の的を射る時に願を込めた神社として有名です。 Next to Sessho-seki stands Nasu Onsen Shrine.
It is known as the shrine where Nasu no Yoichi prayed before he shot at the famous fan target.

神社内には樹齢八百年の松の木があります。
悠久に流れる時間の中で、何を見てきたのでしょうか。 There is an 800-year-old pine tree in the shrine grounds.
It makes people wonder what it has seen over such a long time.
