Hello, this is Kaori.
Shikanoyu is a hot spring with a legend that a hunter discovered it while tracking an injured deer long ago.
The strong sulfur scent, milky white water, and rustic atmosphere are all part of its charm.
With over 1,300 years of history, it is one of the most famous and beloved hot springs in Nasu.

Long ago, a hunter followed a wounded deer and discovered this hot spring—so the legend goes.

I really like the rustic, old-fashioned atmosphere here.
The smell of sulfur is strong in the air.
Surrounded by such nostalgic scenery, you can feel your heart being soothed already.

(Kaori’s Highlights)

There are six different bath temperatures: 41°C, 42°C, 43°C, 44°C, 46°C, and 48°C. The traditional way is to soak in each bath for about three minutes, rest, and repeat this cycle three times.
It’s said that the “proper” method is to pour hot water over your head 100 times with a ladle before entering, but that’s quite a challenge!
The 48°C bath is extremely hot, so be careful not to burn yourself.
If you stay in too long, you might get dizzy from the heat instead of feeling healed, so please be cautious.
People say the sulfur smell clings to your body for two or three days after bathing here.
Even after you return home from your trip, that lingering scent of sulfur will remind you of Nasu and Shikanoyu.
