かつて日本を動かした乃木将軍を祀る神社です。 This shrine enshrines General Nogi, a historic figure who played an important role in Japan.

木造の境内はまるで京都のお寺巡りでもしているかのような風雅な雰囲気に満ちていました。 The wooden shrine buildings have an elegant atmosphere, similar to visiting historic temples in Kyoto.

神社に来たらまずはお手水場で手を清めなければいけません。 When you visit a shrine, you first purify your hands at the chozuya (water basin).

乃木将軍は軍旗を喪失した逸話や、日露戦争で大量の死傷者を出した二百三高地の戦いなど、様々な武勇伝が伝えられる人物です。 General Nogi is known for many stories, such as losing the regimental flag and the hard battle of 203 Meter Hill in the Russo-Japanese War.

愛馬殿号（しんがりごう）も居ました。
乃木将軍がこよなく馬を愛したことは有名です。
愛馬には他に、壽号、璞号、轟号、英号、雷号などがいました。 You can also see his beloved horse Shingari-go here.
General Nogi was famous for his deep love of horses.
His other favorite horses included Ju-go, Haku-go, Todoro-go, Ei-go and Rai-go.

ところで、乃木神社の前に流れている蟇沼（ひきぬま）用水は、江戸時代に開削された貴重な用水ですのでお見逃しのないように。
今も豊富な水量を誇るその用水の姿に、那須野が原開拓時代のロマンを感じることでしょう。 In front of Nogi Jinja flows the Hikinuma irrigation canal, an important canal dug in the Edo period.
Its rich water flow today reminds visitors of the pioneering days of the Nasu-no-hara plain.

乃木神社へと続く並木道は春になると見事な桜並木となり、多くの見物客が訪れるそうです。
ぜひまたその頃に来てみたいと思いました。 The road leading to Nogi Jinja becomes a wonderful tunnel of cherry blossoms in spring and many people come to see it.
I would like to come back again during that season.
