Kurobane Kanko Yana

Hello, this is Kaori.
On hot summer days, playing in the water is the best—so I visited Kurobane Kanko Yana.
A magnificent traditional fish trap (“yana”) is set up in the river, creating a perfect scene of Japanese summer.
Here you can enjoy both fun in the river and delicious ayu (sweetfish) dishes.

Wanting to cool off with some water play, I decided to visit Kurobane Kanko Yana on a hot summer day.

I was surprised by how impressive the wooden “yana” structure was.
You can actually walk up onto the trap itself and take a closer look.

We played in the water near the trap.
The river water is cold, but you can safely enjoy splashing around while looking for tiny creatures in the shallows.

After playing in the river, it’s time to enjoy ayu kamameshi (rice cooked in a small pot with sweetfish).

Mmm, this is wonderful.
Surrounded by scenery that just screams “This is the Japanese summer,” I wanted to forget everything else and savor the moment on this relaxing afternoon.

Playing in the river feels great with the cool water.
Staff members near the trap gave us a simple explanation of how it works, and I was impressed by the wisdom of people in the past.

A meal after playing in the river tastes especially good.
Maybe it’s because you’ve worked up an appetite, but together with the open-air atmosphere it feels fantastic.
A cold beer would be perfect, and there are dishes like river-fish tempura as well—this really is the essence of Japanese summer.
Time seems to pass just a little more slowly here.
