My Lifestyle in Nasu

ヒュッゲな時間
For me, Nasu is a special place only two hours from Tokyo. I try not to make many appointments and stop by restaurants as I feel that day. I also enjoy barbecues on the terrace of my villa. I feel that spending this slow Nasu time is my greatest luxury.
▼ A different lifestyle only two hours from Tokyo

Nasu is about a two-hour drive from Tokyo. It frees us from the noise of daily life and is a place where we can relax as if we were reborn.

The villa has a washing machine, a refrigerator, and other daily appliances. So we can go there quickly with only a small amount of luggage. Recent cars also have good driver-assist functions, so if we use them on the expressway, driving becomes much easier.

バーベキュー

In Nasu, I try not to make many fixed appointments. I do not need to reserve restaurants in advance and just stop by if I see an open one. If everywhere is full, I have a barbecue on the villa terrace instead.
In Nasu, we can spend time comfortably by following our feelings in the moment, without many plans or reservations, so we feel little stress.

Nasu is surrounded by rich nature but is still convenient for daily life. There are many small, tasty restaurants run by chefs who love cooking and many stylish cafés. This balance is one of the main charms of Nasu.

When we spend time in nature, our minds become clear. That may be why beautiful Nasu feels especially refreshing.
It reminds us that we should value our quality of life and live together with nature.

チキンの丸焼き

To avoid traffic jams, we leave Tokyo in the early afternoon and arrive in Nasu in the evening, then go to our favorite butcher. Getting a tasty whole roasted chicken there and eating it with white wine is a moment of pure happiness.

アドバンス・ホースパーティ2

The next day we get up a little early and refresh ourselves by horseback riding from early morning. Riding through the highland air with a fresh breeze blows away all idle thoughts and feels very refreshing.

プールで水浴び

On summer nights, it is also nice to enjoy a swim in the pool on the villa terrace. Cold water is chilly, so we heat it and it becomes like a large bath and very comfortable. A warm pool under the starry sky gives a truly extraordinary moment.

▼ About villa architecture in Nasu

kaori's vacation house

For the villa design, we aimed to balance Asian and European tastes and blend them into an original style.
We also tried to create a comfortable space while keeping the ecological footprint of the house small.

1. The living room with a high ceiling is bright and pleasant. We can adjust the lights easily to change the mood. We also like the fittings that remind us of shoji and fusuma sliding doors.

2. The dining room floor is tiled. We combined tiles of different colors like patchwork. Radiant oil heating keeps it warm even in winter, and the wooden ceiling makes the space feel open above us.

▼ My current favorite in Nasu life

A5ランクのお肉

My current favorite is to buy A5-rank Japanese beef at Toriharu and enjoy a delicious steak with red wine.

The photo shows steak cuts from an A5-rank cow that Toriharu buys by the whole animal.
The meat is soft, juicy, and full of flavor, and it quickly becomes addictive.

It is impressive to see villa owners stop by on their way home and say “Please give me a few kilos,” buying a large amount at once.

Nasu wagyu is rare, but if you make a hometown tax donation to Nasu Town, you can easily get it even while staying in Tokyo. I recommend this way.

那須高原HERB's
Nasu Kogen HERB's

The owner, Mr. Hamatsu, feels like a friendly older brother. While you look around the shop, he often serves you a cup of herbal tea for free. I always stop by this shop when I visit Nasu.

OURS DINING
OURS DINING

In Nasu I try not to make many reservations, but I always book this restaurant in advance. It is a natural-food restaurant that makes you want to visit even if you must reserve.

NASU SHOZO CAFE
NASU SHOZO CAFE

I would really like to relax in the café, but usually I just stop by to buy coffee beans. They first ask, “How do you drink your coffee?” and then grind the beans to match your preferred style.

南ケ丘牧場
Minami-ga-oka Farm

There is no admission fee, so we can easily drop in when passing by. You can enjoy the typical Nasu farm atmosphere, and the soft-serve ice cream is very good.

月井酒店
Tsukii Liquor Store

After buying meat at Toriharu, we naturally stop at this liquor shop located just ahead. Here you can buy “Coco Wine,” which is hard to find in the city center.
Red Coco Wine plus an A5 beef steak is the strongest combination.

トラピストガレット
Trappist Galette

This is a confection made at the Nasu Trappist Monastery. You can also buy it at supermarkets in Nasu without going to the monastery itself. It is not too sweet, has a light crispy texture but is filling, and people are happy to receive it as a gift.

Noblesse Oblige & Nasu

Nasu has a special history as a royal resort around the Nasu Imperial Villa. The area was also developed by former Japanese nobility, which is rare among tourist areas.
